A Tibetan Thangka with the Great Assembly The painting belongs to a type commonly known as Lam-rim Tshogs-zhing, representing the Buddhist great assembly of teachers and deities illustrating the path of salvation and enlightment. In the centre Buddha Shakyamuni with the blue Adibuddha Vajradhara in his heart, surrounded by numerous lamas of different denominations, religious masters, gods, protective deities and buddhas. At the bottom below the lion throne the four Lokapalas Virupaksha, Dhritarashtra, Virudhaka and Vaishravana together with the gods Brahma and Vishnu offering a golden wheel and a white conch shell. At the far right the donor of the painting, a monk, presenting a mandala offering. The painting is set within a framework of brocade. Period: mid 20th century. Measurements: 62?x?42 cm (motive), 115?x?72 cm (with surrounding mounting).
