Artist Name: Chagall, Marc Title: The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflote) Medium: Lithograph Edition Size: 3000 Year: 1967 Paper Size: 40 x 26 inches Image Size: 40 x 26 inches Condition: B: Very Good Condition, with signs of handling or age Notes: Original lithograph of the Magic Flute created by Marc Chagall for the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1967. It is referenced in the Sorlier catalogue on page 106. Bottom left text reads: ‘D"Apres Marc Chagall - CH. Sorlier Grav.". The text on the bottom right reads: ‘Printed in France - ? Mourlot". He had two basic reputations, writes Lewis: as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. He experienced modernism's "golden age" in Paris, where "he synthesized the art forms of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, and the influence of Fauvism gave rise to Surrealism". Yet throughout these phases of his style "he remained most emphatically a Jewish artist, whose work was one long dreamy reverie of life in his native village of Vitebsk."
