Maria Martinez (1884-1980). Blackware jar with compressed globular form, tapering shoulder with a feather band, three bands at the waist, tapering to a circular base. Base is signed Maria/Popovi 1063. This jar won First Premium at the New Mexico State Fair in 1964, and includes the prize ribbon and entry tag from this event.
Maria Martinez was a member of the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. She is credited with the rediscovery of the method for making blackware pottery such as this piece, and received two honorary doctorates for her pottery work. Her son, Popovi Da, painted this piece.
