Even in the world of cars, no one is irreplaceable. It is a rule every enthusiast knows well and everyone needs to be prepared to see his/her favourite cars stop being produced or change completely. The Giulietta Sprint was a real legend and greatly appreciated by everybody: eventually, after 7 years into production it was ageing well but its performance was well behind its competitors. The car which had to fill in the shoes of the Sprint had a tough job to do: convince the Alfisti that it was time to move on. Such a car was the Giulia GT, penned by nonother than Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone. It might sound odd for a sportscar such as the Giulia GT, but the first priority was Alfa was that it should have had enough interior space to accomodate four people. Boasting a new chassis and featuring new 1.3, 1.6 (and later also 1750 and 2.000) engines, Alfa Romeo's new GT was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 9th 1962 and it has been the first Alfa to be assembled in the new Arese plant. One of the most notable features of the GT was its slightly raised front bonnet, also known as the "Scalino" (Italian for small step), which according to the first designs, it should have aided an additional front air intake, which was never installed. The customers appreciated this and Alfa Romeo decided to produce the Giulia GT with such a design until 1970, with the sole exception of the 1967 1750 Veloce, which never had such a design feature. The GT was able to win the hearts of many: after 210.000 units sold, production stopped in 1976, almost 14 years after it was put on the market.
