This vessel type is also known as so-called marriage bowl and such carefully selected and auspiciousness vessels were especially popular at the Imperial Qing court. They were also often coveted gifts for special occasions such as a wedding or a birthday.

This green jade ‘Marriage Bowl’ from the Qianlong Period is most remarkable for its large size. Only very few comparable examples are known today, most of the in the Imperial collections. Marriage Bowls like this mostly show delicately carved ring handles in the shape of butterflies or – as on the present piece – dragonheads. The dimensions of this superb marriage bowl is giving us an idea that the original boulder of jade, from which this piece was carved out, would have been of considerable size, underlining the tremendous value of this bowl at that time.

A closely related marriage bowl regarding the stylistic depiction of the ring handles and archaistic appearance but of considerably smaller size is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum New York (Inv. no. 04.6.11). Other comparable jade wedding bowls were located in the collection Dexingshuwu, in the collection R.H.R. Palmer as well as in the Alan & Simone Hartman collection. Cf. a similar jade bowl illustrated in the Catalogue of the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Burlington House, Royal Academy of Arts, London 1935, no. 2809.

Condition:
The bowl is in very good condition with hardly any signs of age and wear. The height measures 8 cm and the width 35.5 cm.
