Blue and White Style
Blue and white porcelain had its golden age in the Chinese Ming dynasty (1368-1644), but it is believed that this type of porcelain was first introduced in the Tang dynasty (618-906). The proverbial ‘Ming vase’ is still the epitome of the European idea of Chinese porcelain art. The blue color is achieved by a mixture of cobalt oxide and water, and is then painted onto the porcelain before glazing and firing. Afterwards it is coated with a transparent glaze.
Crane
The crane is one of the most depicted birds in Asia and is both a status symbol as well as a signifier of longevity. As a pair or together with a pine tree the crane is a popular motif in traditional Chinese New Year pictures. The crane paired with a lotus flower is a symbol of peace and harmony. Often the motif of the crane is visible on official’s robes. There it is usually depicted standing on one foot in a rising tide, which symbolizes the official’s ties to the Emperor as well as his high rank.
Deer
The deer is a popular and auspicious motif in Asian art since the late Shang and Zhou dynasties. It is part of the Taoist cult of immortality, which said that a deer was able to find the ‘mushroom of immortality’. The deer is also a symbol of longevity. Because it can reach old age, its renewable antlers are believed to have healing powers. According to Chinese legends, the age of the deer is visible in the color of its fur. Thus a 1000-year-old dear has a gray fur whereas a 5000-year-old deer has a white fur. In Korean legends, the deer has also functions as a mediator between humans and gods.
