Description of the single scenes, going clockwise
The lower area shows the birth of the Buddha: Queen Maya grabs in the branches of a tree and the child comes out of her right side
Opposing the monkey's gift of honey is visible, with Buddha in bhadrasana on a throne and a bowl full of honey in his hands
Above the scene of taming the elephant Nalagiri by Buddha can be seen, the elephant is shown in significantly smaller size under the right hand of Buddha
Opposite the descent from the Trayatrimsa heaven is depicted, Buddha with one worshipper on each side
In the segment above a depiction of Buddha on the right and the left, each seated on a throne with the gesture of teaching. This representations is about the first sermon of the Buddha and the miracle of his reproduction (miracle of Sravasti)
About the main figure the so-called parinirvana, the entrance of the Buddha into nirvana, can be seen.
This narrative scheme features an iconography characteristic for the Pala period in Northeastern India during the 10th/11th century. A very similar stele from the Pala period sharing many stylistic analogies but of considerably smaller size can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Inv. no. 2009.541). Another stylistically related stone relief can be found in the Cleveland Museum of Art (inventory no. 1935.146). The relief is in good age related condition with usual signs of wear. The height is c. 47 cm.
