Bhuta is a Sanskrit word meaning, “passed way” or “spirit”. Here it refers to the ancient cult practiced by the Tulu speaking people of south coastal Karnataka, India.Bhuta rituals, orbhutakola are interactive between the audience-participants and the oracle who invokes thebhuta or spirit. The oracle acts as the mouthpiece for the spirit to answer questions, solve disbutes, and act of a judge above any refute. Based on astrological calculations and the need of town, thebhuta kola typically takes place about once a year. The upper-class families fund thebhuta kolas. These same families also organize the functions and provide the ritual objects (metal masks as seen here and ornaments) as well as the offerings. During the rituals, the oracle proves himself to be a spiritual host by performing rigorous dances in heavy metal garments – on occasion he subjects himself to being lifted up by metal hooks in his flesh.
This particular bhuta mask is of the Pilichamundi – a ferocious tiger manifestation of the Hindu goddess Durga. Pilichamundi’s name is derived from the Tulu word for tiger. The mask here includes a menacing facial expression, signifying a wish for great power.
This mask is in overall good condition with minor casting imperfections on the forehead, bottom lip, and chin.
