This beautiful bronze is a tantric depiction of Varaha – Vishnu’s boar headed avatar. Here Varaha is beautifully depicted in gilt with exquisite details. Of the figure’s eight hands, six hold common attributes of Vishnu, including: a Sudarshana chakra, a lotus bud, a conch, a gada, a sword, and three feathers. With his two remaining hands, Varaha makes the varada and abhaya mudras for generosity and fearlessness. Her facial expression is rendered powerful yet gentle. Resting on Varaha’s shoulder is Bhudevi, the goddess of the earth and Varaha’s consort. Varaha is depicted wearing a feather design dhoti and a fine crown. This bronze is cast with uncommon expressiveness.
It is in very good condition with minor surface wear from age.
Varaha
Varaha is the third of the Dashavatara, Vishnu’s ten principal avatars. He has the head of a boar and the body of a man. The bronze here depicts Varaha saving Bhu Devi from the evil demon king Hiranyaksha. In the story, Hiranyaksha attempts to submerge Bhu Devi in the cosmic ocean. First Bhu appeals to Brahma for help, but she is told to appeal to Maha Vishnu instead. When Bhu appeals to Maha Vishnu, he then manifests himself as Varaha. Varaha battles and slays the evil Hiranyaksha, rescuing Bhu from the ocean and restoring her to her rightful place in the universe.
