This is a fine example of a rare Nepalese stone sculpture. The beautifully shaped Buddha makes the bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture, with his right hand, and faces his left hand skyward while resting it on his lap. With these two gestures, this precious statue demonstrates the moment when Buddha Shakyamuni overpowered the demon Mara, getting through to the goddess of the earth to assert his enlightenment. Here the black stone is sculpted to give the Buddha a meditative face, with half closed. He is depicted in the midst of his enlightenment, under the bodhi tree motif.
This statue is in overall very good condition with traces of age and wear.
Buddha Shakyamuni (Siddhartha Gautama)
Siddhartha Gautama lived in Northern India ca. 2,500 years ago. The epithet Shakyamuni refers to his princely origins and can be translated as ‘the wise man from the family of Shakya’. Born as a prince, Shakyamuni felt a deep compassion for the four sufferings of mankind (birth, aging, sickness and death) from an early age on. Eventually he left his family and went on a spiritual journey. After a few years he attained enlightenment. As Buddha (‘the awakened one’), Shakyamuni traveled all over India to share his wisdom with people and promote peace. At the age of 80 Buddha Shakyamuni passed away and his teachings gave rise to various schools of Buddhism.
