This ink and color painting by Chinese artist Liu Maoshan features a stormy landscape with a small harbor village near low mountains. Hovering above the mountains are dark clouds and a flock of birds.
The image has some very light foxing to the bottom, left corner and the silk mounting has a few light creases.
Liu Maoshan (b. 1942)
Liu Maoshan graduated from the Suzhou Institute of Arts and Crafts in 1962 having studied classical European masters and Modern Impressionism. He later changed his interest to Chinese landscape painting, becoming particularly skilled in painting water villages in Jiangnan. Today, Liu Maoshan is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and his work can be found in the permanent collections of museums all over the world.
Provenance: Purchased by Ms. Helaine Ohayon and Ms. Amy Schwartz, directly from the artist at his studio in China in 1988. Ms. Ohayon and Ms. Schwartz purchased several paintings in Hong Kong and China during this time, in the process creating a contemporary Chinese paintings collection, The Mandarin Studio. The collection was subsequently exhibited at Harvard University in 1989, asNew Expressions: Contemporary Chinese Brush Paintings, 1984-1989, in theAdams House Modern Chinese Painting Exhibition Series. An exhibition introduction was written by Professor Wu Hung, at the time Assistant Professor of the Department of Fine Arts, Adams House, Harvard University. Please see supporting documents.
