Scroll Height: 69 1/8" Width: 17 3/4" Painting Height: 53 7/8" Width: 13 1/2"

Hu Shi (胡適; 17 December 1891-24 February 1962) Hu Shih, Chinese traditional Calligraphy couplet, ink on paper laid to silk, hanging scrolls. As a gift for Mr. Wu Guozhen. Each with eight semi-cursive script characters on pale-creme paper, one with signature and two seal marks. Laid on silk. Rich ink applied to paper in a semi-cursive script by Hu Shi (胡適, 17 December 1891-24 February 1962), Hu Hsih. Hu Shi is a renowned Chinese writer who was nominated to receive a Nobel prize in Literature in 1939. Seven characters are evenly spaced in a singular column on each scroll. Left Scroll is signed by Hu Shi and stamped by a single vermillion-red seal. Each scroll has a hanging cord attached to the end rod.

PROVENANCE:
From the heirloom collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨; October 21, 1903-June 6, 1984) was a Chinese political figure and historian, government official who served as mayor of Hankow (1932-1938), mayor of Chung-king (1939-1941), political vice minister of foreign affairs (1943-45), mayor of Shanghai (1946-1948), and governor of Taiwan (1950-1952) and the former Chairman of Taiwan Provincial Government. He resigned in 1953 and went to the United States, charging that Taiwan was becoming a police state.
K.C. Wu lived in the United States where he served as professor of Chinese history at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. During his time in the United States, he wrote various works, including a detailed analysis on Chinese culture in the context of mythology and early history in his book The Chinese Heritage.
Wu is remembered mainly for his vital role in the formation of a liberal modern Taiwan and his anti-communist beliefs typical of a member of Kuomintang, but he is also remembered for his brave anti-Kuomintang rhetoric and turbulent disagreements with the more Russian-styled second President of Taiwan.

LOT NOTES:
Hu Shi (胡適; 17 December 1891-24 February 1962) Hu Shih, was a Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat. Hu is widely recognized today as a key contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform in his advocacy for the use of written vernacular Chinese. He was influential in the May Fourth Movement, one of the leaders of China's New Culture Movement, was a president of Peking University, and in 1939 was nominated for a Nobel Prize in literature. He had a wide range of interests such as literature, history, textual criticism, and pedagogy. He was also an influential redology scholar and held the famous Jiaxu manuscript (甲戌本) for many years until his death. Hu was the Republic of China's ambassador to the United States of America between 1938 and 1942. He was recalled in September 1942 and was replaced by Wei Tao-Ming. Hu then served as chancellor of Peking University between 1946 and 1948, and later in 1957 became president of the Academia Sinica in Taipei, where he remained until his death. He was also chief executive of the Free China Journal, which was eventually shut down for criticizing Chiang Kai-shek. He died of a heart attack in Nankang, Taipei at the age of 70, and is buried in a tomb in Hu Shih Park, by the Academia Sinica campus.Hu Shih's work fell into disrepute in mainland China until a 1986 article, written by Ji Xianlin, "A Few Words for Hu Shi", advocated acknowledging not only Hu Shih's mistakes, but also his contributions to modern Chinese literature. His article was sufficiently convincing to many scholars that it caused a re-evaluation of the development of modern Chinese literature and the role of Hu Shih.
