A hand gesture that offers reassurance and safety - dispelling fear and according divine protection and bliss to the devotee. This is one of the earliest Mudra found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina images. . The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. He has a large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head that symbolizing his high level of spiritual development.
