Description: Set of 5 historical photographs of dance troupe members from "Ted Shawn & His Male Dancers", likely photographed at Jacob's Pillow: a dance school, retreat, and theater in Massachusetts, and an original program from the theatre's twelfth season in 1953. The school was established by Ted Shawn (1891-1972), one of the first notable male pioneers of American modern dance, whose mission was to fight for acceptance of the American male dancer and to bring awareness of the art form from a male perspective. Shawn's style showcased athletic and masculine movement. He was married to Ruth St. Denis, but later partnered with his principal dancer, Barton Mumaw, between 1931-1948 at a time when gay relationships were considered taboo. Jacob's Pillow is now a National Historic Landmark and home of the longest running dance festival in the US. Ted Shawn went on to receive the Heritage Award from the National Dance Association in 1965 and continued teaching until his death in 1972. Photos measure 4" x 5" and 5" x 7", program measures 8-1/2" x 11".
