He was a classmate of Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832-1898), probably one of the most famous Russian landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century. In 1858/59, Gine traveled to the island of Valaam in Lake Ladoga, where he discovered beautiful landscapes and innumerable subjects for his paintings. Works by Aleksandr Vasil'evich Gine can be found in museums such as the Tret'jakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the State Art Museum in Kazan.
