China, 17th – 18th century
Cast with a bushy tail seated on its hindquarters with forelegs firmly placed in front, the right one resting on the brocade ball, with a ferocious expression detailed with bulging eyes, ruyi-shaped nostrils, the jaw opened to reveal an immaculate row of teeth and four imposing fangs, its head turned to the right and covered by furry manes to the shoulder and all along its back. The brocade ball with an intricate curly-waves design in high relief, elegantly executed.

Condition: Good condition with only minor wear. The undersides of the paws show remainders of old mountings. The original screw attaching the brocade ball to the lion is lost
Provenance: Property from the Wunsch collection, Mannheim, Germany, assembled in China prior to 1905, and thence by descent
