Description: Grey stone; comes with modern metal stand
China, Song / Yuan Dynasty, 12th - 14th century
This spirited portrayal of a Luohan was masterly carved from greyish stone with white speckles and ochre encrustation. The holy man shows an elongated forehead and chubby earlobes, typical for depictions of Luohan throughout the times. Remarkable is the facial expression as in contrast to most Lohan sculptures who are rendered with a pious smile, the present portrait shows a grumpy If not to say disgusted mimic with arched eyebrows and closed eyes.
