Francesco Bartolozzi was born in Florence in 1727 and was one of the most respected Italian engravers of his generation. This particular piece is a stipple etching after a work by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Other copies can be found in The Royal Collection and the British Museum.The subject, Elizabeth Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, was known as Lady Elizabeth Foster when Reynolds first created his masterpiece. Born Elizabeth Christiana Hervey, she was known as Bess by those closest to her and led a remarkable and somewhat controversial life.
