Description: COLLECTION OF ANTEBELLUM LOVE LETTERS
Pre-Civil War Correspondence, spanning 1850-1861, from "Charlie", who has gone to Warsaw, Indiana, to Miss Maria Becker at Cedar Mill, Albany County, New York. A very strange, gothic exchange, wherein he refers to her as his 'wife', although they were apparently never married. She is a teacher, makes notation on some letters regarding his state of mind, but obviously continued to write him, providing unintended encouragement. He is obsessed, sometimes bordering on crazy, sends back ripped up letters, tells her he is done with her, with Indiana, with life, etc. Most have envelopes, but the stamps have been removed.
