Jean Fautrier (French, 1898-1964) on the lower right corner. 28 x 22.5 cm (11.0 x .8.9 inches) Frame size: 45 x 40 cm (17.7 x 15.7 inches). Jean Fautrier was a French painter and sculptor best known for his involvement in the Art Informel group. Fautrier’s works evolved from brooding yet naturalistic figure paintings to almost wholly abstract gestures and shapes. Born on May 16, 1898 in Paris, France, Fautrier moved to London with his mother. He later attended both the Royal Academy of Arts and the Slade School, but found both stifling and academic. Fautrier was dismissed from the army during World War I for ill health and returned to France where he travelled around working odd jobs including illustrating books for André Malraux. Fautrier bore witness to the torture and atrocities Nazis inflicted on French citizens during World War II and was even arrested by the Gestapo—these events caused huge impact on the nature of his work. He was the subject of a retrospective in 1964, the year of his death, at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. His works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, among others. The artist died on July 21, 1964 in Chatenay-Malabry, France. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
