Debra Franses Bean (b.1967) Lava Bag Mixed media in solid transparent resin, in the form of a three dimensional handbag encasing bubbles of orange 'lava', 29 cm. x 20 cm. x 8 cm., weight 2kg._x005F_x000D_ DFB: This iconic bag makes reference to the larva lamp from the 60's. Each molecule has been hand made and replicated to look like the original Edward Craven Walker design which consisted of a special coloured wax mixture inside a glass vessel. The heat warmed wax rises through the surrounding liquid, cools, loses its buoyancy, and falls back to the bottom of the vessel in a cycle that is visually suggestive of pāhoehoe lava, hence the name. This sculpture is an abstract formation that has a playful yet biological aesthetic. I made this one in Orange.
