Il intègre l'école des Beaux-Arts de Hano?, fondée en 1925. Il y étudie la pein-ture, le dessin et la sculpture jusqu'en 1931. Jusque dans les années 1940, il exerce en tant que sculpteur.Il obtient du gouvernement une bourse de voyage et d'études à Paris à l'occasion de l'Exposition universelle en 1931, et y réside jusqu'en 1949 avant de s'installer sur la C?te d'Azur. Il s'intéresse pendant cette période à la peinture et tente de concilier la tradition sino-vietnamienne avec l'art occidental. Il rêve de donner une place prédominante à la peinture sino-vietnamienne. C'est notam-ment par la peinture sur soie que Vu Cao Dam exprime son talent. On y retrouve les influences der Marc Chagall ou encore de tenants de l'art Brut comme Dubuffet.Il trouve ses sujets de prédilection dans les portraits et les scènes de genre où ses compatriotes sont représentés la plupart du temps en costume traditionnel vietnamien. Ses lignes sont allongées, les couleurs sont nuancées et les silhouettes sont délicates et graciles.A la recherche de scènes souvent intimes, il livre un regard sensible sur la vie contempo-raine, la femme occupant souvent une place centrale, à l'heure où l'on passe d'une véné-ration, quasi post-mortem, de la femme en tant qu'ancêtre à la reconnaissance de son r?le actif dans la société.?
Vu Cao Dam was born in 1908 in Hanoi to a French-speaking father. He entered the Fine Arts School of Hanoi, founded in 1925, where he studied painting, drawing and sculpture until 1931. He worked as a sculptor until the 1940s.He obtained a government grant to travel and study in Paris during the Universal Exhibition of 1931, and lived there until 1949, when he moved to the C?te d'Azur. During this period, he turned to painting and attempted to rec-oncile the Sino-Vietnamese tradition with Western art. His ambition was to give a pre-dominant place to Sino-Vietnamese painting. He expressed his talent mainly through painting on silk. Marc Chagall's influence was evident, and that of Outsider artists like Dubuffet.His favourite subjects were portraits and genre scenes, in which his compatriots appear mostly in traditional Vietnamese costume. The lines are elongated, the col-ours subtle and the silhouettes delicate and graceful.Often focusing on intimate scenes, he cast a sensitive eye on contemporary life, where women frequently played a central role. At this time, the perception of women was changing from their quasi-post-mortem ven-eration as ancestors to a recognition of their active role in society.?
