LOUIS VALTAT (1869-1952) Raisins et poiresHuile sur toile, signée en bas à droite38.5 x 46 cm - 15 1/8 x 18 1/8 inOil on canvas, signed lower rightLe certificat n°460/1332, rédigé par Louis André Valtat (petit-fils de l'artiste), en date du 20 juillet 1999 sera remis à l'acquéreur.PROVENANCE:Collection privée, Paris?Louis Valtat est né à Dieppe le 8 ao?t 1869. Dès 1886, il entre à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts et suit une formation également à l'Académie Julian où il se lie d'amitié avec les peintres Albert André et Pierre Bonnard.Il est lauréat en 1890 du prix Jauvin d'Attainville (concours institué par l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts) et expose dès 1893 au Salon des artistes indépendants. Il représente alors essentiellement des paysages et s'inspire de l'environnement dans lequel il évolue. A Paris, ce sera l'animation des rues, à Arcachon où il est en convalescence en 1895, les paysages maritimes.Ses peintures sont remarquées au Salon des indépendants de 1896 et annoncent ?le Fauvisme? par son intensification de la couleur. L'association de son oeuvre à ce courant est aujourd'hui cependant à nuancer: l'artiste a certes fréquenté les nabis, mais aussi Renoir, Signac... autant de personnages qui ont une influence sur son oeuvre, ainsi diversifiée.C'est en 1900 que Louis Valtat passe un accord avec le marchand d'art Ambroise Vollard qui détiendra par la suite la quasi-totalité de sa production picturale. Ambroise Vollard organise sa première exposition personnelle et il expose au Salon d'Automne de 1905, où il est l'un des artistes les plus remarqués avec Henri Matisse et Albert Marquet.Après avoir fait l'acquisition d'une propriété à Choisel en 1924, il s'inspire de son jardin, des fleurs, et des fruits qu'il y cultive et réalise ainsi plusieurs natures mortes. Certaines natures mortes sont révélatrices de son attachement au mouvement nabi qui cherche à se libérer du réalisme et s'imprègne davantage d'orientalisme et de japonisme. On y retrouve également les tons vifs du fauvisme. Il renouvelle le genre de la nature morte.La reconnaissance de son art lui est officiellement acquise en 1927 lorsqu'il est nommé Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.Louis Valtat, sans jamais se rapprocher d'un courant en particulier mais en c?toyant les plus grands artistes néo-impressionnistes, fauves ou nabis, participe d'une certaine transition entre le courant impressionniste et fauviste tout en travaillant les différentes tendances émergentes.? Today, however, the association of his work with this movement should be seen in context: the artist certainly mixed with the Nabis, but also with Renoir, Signac and others: all figures who influenced his highly varied style.In 1900, Louis Valtat signed an agreement with the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, who thereafter managed virtually all his pictorial output.
