Georges Braque (1882-1963) contributed to the ‘wearable art’ concept?of jewels in?the post-War period.?The traditional?notion of jewellery expressing wealth, status?and reflecting fashion became less important and inspired artists and designers to express innovative sculptural forms.
Braque turned his attention to jewellery at the age of 79. Metamorphoses was?a collection where his two-dimensional sketches were turned into jewels and?of which the present work forms a part.?These jewels were produced?by the?highly regarded and?experienced jeweller Baron Heger de L?wenfeld between 1961 and 1963.
Over a hundred items designed?by Braque?were exhibited at the Musée du Louvre from March to May 1963, just before?his death.?The pieces were?inspired by myths and themes of birds and fish, each bearing a symbolic name of a classical god such as the ’Poseidon’ necklace offered in this sale.signed G Braque and?Heger de L?wenfeld and numbered 016diamond setinner circumference: 390mm., 15?in.A drawing by the artist for the present lot?is dated?23 September 1962.
