Tempera and pastel impressionist painting on paper, featuring water lilies in a pond. Signed and attributed to Oscar Claude Monet (1840-1926) in the lower left corner. 10.91 x 6.22 inch (27.7 x 15.8 cm). Claude Monet was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement’s philosophy of expressing one’s perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting. Money studied his subjects intently, planned his paintings, and worked hard to achieve his results. He often painted a series of the same subject to capture the changing effects of the light, swapping canvases as the day progressed. Monet’s water gardens marked the pinnacle of his horticultural success and became his most celebrated subject. The play of light and textures condensed many of the interest that informed the Impressionist aesthetic. Monet filled his pond with water lilies, selecting special hybrids in order to increase the range of colours of their flowers; the water lilies have roots embedded in the muddy bottom of the pond, hence the recurrence of the same or similar constellation –like arrangements through the paintings. Monet’s gardens at the Giverny evolved over the many years that he had lived there, capturing the evolution in his numerous works. The artist created numerous canvases and works on paper of the pond, showing a single subject in differing light conditions. Provenance of this painting has not been confirmed to this date. This painted is stamped on the resverse, the stamp appears to be from a previous collection located in France. PROVENANCE: Private estate (Rome, Italy).
