Description: This silk scroll of a delightful troop of Gibbons of all ages hanging from a tree in the foreground of a waterfall, is a common theme in Japanese painting, called Monkeys Reaching For the Moon. The gibbons, intricately furred by the artist, hang down and cling from all angles to reach the water below, where the moon is reflected. Unfortunately, several splashes can be seen which has distorted the elusive reflection. This tale represents the grasping soul of humanity. Signed Tan'yu join, sealed Morinobu, Edo Period,18/19th century.
