A WOOD NETSUKE OF DARUMA
Wood netsukeJapan19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The first patriarch of Zen Buddhism in a characteristically meditative pose, seated with crossed legs and one hand laid on the other. Bodhidharma, as Daruma, is known outside of Japan, meditated for nine years in front of a wall after he arrived there, which might serve as an explanation for his grim, withdrawn expression. Well-crafted garment folds, fine patina, large himotoshi on the underside.HEIGHT 4.2 CMCondition: Very good condition with an excellent patina, especially to the underside. Minor scratches on the surface.Provenance: British private collection
