Lacquered wood netsukeJapan19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Futen, or Fujin, the god of the wind, appears like an oni (demon) in this work, with small horns on his head, a red body and claws. Seated on a circular cloud with a bag of winds beside him, he is holding a spatula in one hand, which he uses to dig a hole in the cloud to see what is happening on earth below. Lacquer netsuke are quite rare and were made by lacquer masters. They are usually slightly lighter in weight.
