A WOOD NETSUKE OF A JUGGLING BOY
Wood netsukeJapan19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)This karako in a Chinese garment is balancing a ball on his shaved head and holding another ball in one hand, while holding a balancing rod in the other. The finely carved facial features and garment folds show great skill. Good patina, himotoshi on the reverse. Scenes such as this are often underappreciated in netsuke art, due to their simple ‘daily life’ nature. However, one can really see that the artist saw this scene and conveyed all the liveliness and beauty into this miniature work of art.HEIGHT 6.1 CMCondition: Good, worn conditionProvenance: British private collection
