A WALNUT NETSUKE OF A TURTLE IN THE MANNER OF HIDARI ISSAN
Walnut netsukeJapan19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Carving a walnut into a netsuke is a difficult task that requires great skill. The rule for this kind of netsuke is to leave a large part of the original structure as is. The smooth side is carved in relief with a turtle, or kame, trudging through a meadow with grass tufts. The nut approaches the netsuke ideal very closely, as it is very light, well-rounded and robust. Framed himotoshi on the underside. The manner of carving and style of himotoshi is similar to the walnut carvings of Hidari Issan.LENGTH 4.2 CMCondition: Good condition with expected wearProvenance: German private collection
