Lacquer and wood hako netsuke with inlaysJapanlate 19th century, Meiji period (1868–1912)An interesting hako netsuke (small box/container) consisting of two parts, the cover lacquered in gold above a roiro-nuri ground. The gold lacquer is embellished with various flowers inlaid in mother-of-pearl. The center is decorated with a stag inlaid in mother-of-pearl, with one hoof raised as the gentle creature looks backwards; the antlers inlaid with shibuichi. The reverse with a fern and a star-shaped flower in gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl.SIZE 3.5 x 3.2 CMCondition: Good condition; some loss of the antler of the stagProvenance: French private collection
