Ink and watercolor on paper, hanging scroll, featuring cranes, birds and ponies, signed and attributed to Chen Zhifo (1896-1962), inscribed with two artist seals, 145 x 50 cm, Chen Zhifo spent six years studying arts and crafts in Japan. After the age of thirty-five, he concentrated on traditional Chinese "meticulous brush" paintings like the one shown here. It is confined to a narrow range of delicate colors and retains a Japanese sensitivity to silhouette and the beauty of a particular moment.
