Oil on canvas, framed. Featuring a rural scene of a leisure scene. Signed and attributed to William Shayer the Elder (British, 1787-1897) on the lower right corner. 60 x 50 cm (23.6 x 19.7 inches). Frame size: 75 x 65 cm (29.5 x 25.6 inches). The name of William Shayer (British, 1787–1897) has been linked to George Morland, Julius Caesar Ibbetson, and Francis Wheatley, prominent 18th-century English landscape painters. Shayer is best known for depicting the rural life of Hampshire and the New Forest; the countrymen and women going about their daily tasks, or resting in the shade of leafy boughs, faces shaded by big rustic hats; stopping at the inn on their return from market, or urging on teams of horses hauling timber. His paintings express the great love and sympathy he had for the countryside and its people, his strong sense of draughtsmanship, and the balance of his palette, which enabled him to reproduce the spirit of what he observed. Although he did not exhibit until well into his 30s, his work achieved considerable success and praise from the art critics of his day.
