A VERY FINE & SCARCE CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN MANCERINA, QIANLONG. The base of shell form resting on raised dome foot, the borders with ribbed panels, the cavetto with locking receptacle for the lotus shaped cup with pierced sides. Overall decorated with lace and suspended flower forms. Diameter 9 inches (23 cm).Comparison: An identical example dated to circa 1730, is held by the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, accession number 70.59.1. A mancerina is special dish originally designed to serve chocolate. It was invented, or named after Pedro de Toledo, 1st Marquis of Mancera, who served as Viceroy of Peru from 1639 to 1648. Known in France as "tasse trembleuse" and "Chocolate stand" in England, some were ordered from China for export but few examples are found.
