Description: Emperor Guangxu, born Zaitian, was the eleventh Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and the ninth Qing Emperor who ruled over China Proper. He reigned between 1875 and 1908, but he was in fact ruler under the influence of Empress Cixi, and only ruled in his own name between 1889-1898. He initiated the "One Hundred Days of Reform", meant to modernise the end of the 19th century China, but was suddenly halted when Empress Cixi launched a coup d'etat in 1898, when he was placed under house arrest until his death. The name of his reign means "glorious succession". The porcelain bearing his imperial mark stands out through the delicacy and attention to design and painting alike, as the great porcelain workshops of the time aimed at distancing themselves from the standards and rigours of centuries before them.
