Central Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A solid bronze bell, the finial of its handle adorned with the sacred celestial cow Kamadhenu, representing altruism, goodness, and motherly love. Kamadhenu is regarded as the mother of all Hindu deities and thought to have the power to grant wishes to truth seekers. Bells like this example traditionally have been used in Hindu ceremonies and are called ghantas. They are usually rung at the beginning of puja ceremonies, as practitioners believe their sound is at once pleasing to the gods and will keep evil spirits at bay. Bell is complete with its iron clapper and produces a beautiful tone! Size: 4.125" W at widest x 7.125" H (10.5 cm x 18.1 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Paul and Louise Bernheimer, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA, acquired before 1980.

Intact with minor casting flaws to Kamadhenu and expected surface wear to the bell. Bell functions well.
