Europe, Germany, ca. 18th century CE. A wonderful hand carved wooden lion with nicely rendered mane, paws with claws, curled tail, and an expressive face finished in golden brown hues with black spots, the mouth and claws painted red. The powerful creature lies prone upon an integral base, also highlighted with red pigment. Perhaps he is resting, perhaps he is poised to pounce upon his next victim. You be the judge. Size: 4.875" L x 1.875" W x 3.25" H (12.4 cm x 4.8 cm x 8.3 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Paul and Louise Bernheimer, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA, acquired before 1980.
