This wooden Hemba mask was carved to imitate a monkey face featuring a prominent, crescent shaped mouth with no teeth showing, slanted eyes, and a long pointed nose. ?The function and meaning of these masks is still unclear to scholars. ?Some theories suggest that the animated expressions of these masks may evoke a beneficiary spirit.
