Middle East, Byzantine, ca. 12th to 15th century CE. A handsome bronze relief centerpiece from a triptych depicting Christ as Pantocrator with legible lettering, created during the Byzantine era. The most accepted translation of Pantocrator is "Almighty" or "All Powerful" and the presentations of Jesus in this example certainly projects his ominpotence. This piece would have been the central section of a Deesis, a traditional iconic representation of Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator enthroned and carrying a holy book, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist with their hands raised in supplication on behalf of humanity. It is presented on a custom mount. Size: piece itself measures 2.5" W x 3" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm); with stand 3"W x 4.625"H (7.6 x 11.7 cm)
