Self-taught as a painter, between 1960 and 1964 he was asked by President Sukarno to be the vice-governor of Jakarta, becoming governor the next year. After stepping down in this role, he retreated into a life of seclusion, continuing to paint through illness. Just before his death, he was honoured with his first solo exhibition, organised by the famous Indonesian collector, Ciputra.
