Description: A Rare Yaozhou Censer
Yuan Dynasty(1279-1368)
The censer is set on three feet under a deep green glaze with two upstanding lug handles (one repaired). There is a carved floral pattern around the outside and a curlicue pattern around the outside of the lip. The three carved flowers on one side of the censer differ from the three flowers on the other side. The interior is plain. The clay body is grey.
It is likely the article lay on its side during potting at an angle of about 30?° while the glaze on the inside and on the base pooled to one side where the depth of the minutely bubbled translucent glaze can be seen.
It is interesting to speculate whether the five 'toes' on the feet were meant to represent the toes of a bear a€” the bear mythically holding up the ancient Chinese heaven from collapsing upon the earth. Han greenware frequently had 'bear' feet for this reason (cf No 47).
