Description: The Finest Quality. Antique Meiji period pair of massive cloisonne vases created by the foremost cloisonne master in the Ando studio. The intricate wiring on the fronts and backs of these monumental vases immediately places them in a class of their own. Their subject suggests a theme of marital bliss - the beauty on the phoenix (Empress) - and the male figure on the dragon (Emperor) - about to meet. Surrounded by an imaginary Chinese landscape of mythical proportions - vast roiling waters, craggy mountains and retreats enveloped by pine and swirling clouds - the extraordinary imagery defines the scene as one of passion. The double-gourd mark of Kawade Shibataro rendered on the bases. Comes together with tomobako and original carved stands. Each measures approximately 15 1/2" x 9" Good condition with mild surface wear. Accompanied with Flying Cranes Antiques 2009 receipt, total cost $50,000.00 USD. Provenance: "Private World Class Collection" Miami, Florida. Hill Auction Gallery in house USA continental shipping $200 plus insurance. (43)
