An imposing large bronze bell on wood stand Heavily cast and of ovoid form, the lower section of the bell slightly flaring terminating in a straight rim, the body with panels decorated in relief with two chilong facing a fiery pearl framed by raised rectangular lines with canted corners below a border of raised lotus leaves, the handle cast as a loop for suspension formed of two sinewy dragons clasping the bell, the finial a fiery pearl flame, alternating with the chilong panels are two rows of calligraphy reading:
“By imperial command, supervised by the Bureau of Works in the 8th month of the 3rd year of the Hongwu reign (1370)”.
The bronze with soft light green patination. The ornate wood ‘dragon’ stand from which the bell hangs of rectangular form, the upper register topped with two outward-facing dragon heads above a section with two confronting dragons, the mid-section with a trellis of leafy tendrils, the lower section with openwork angular carving and an openwork coin to the centre, above a panel carved with meander work. Height of bell 77 cm. Height of stand 187 cm and width 87 cm.
