A CIVIL WAR ERA FEDERAL DOCUMENT, "Confiscation Decree for Mr. George Pritchard of New Orleans, Signed by Benjamin Flanders, Supervising Special Agent of the Treasury Department," ink on lined paper, "No. 35 [sic] Office Supervising Special Agent of the Treasury Department, New Orleans, August 13, 1863: Received into my charge from Captain John McLure, at New Orleans, La. The following described property for account of the United States Treasury Department to writ: Square #192 No. 172 [sic]. Measurement 32 x 128...occupied by families in employ of Quartermastered. The above property is claimed to be the property of Mr. George Pritchard of New Orleans, La. (a registered enemy of the United States and subject to confiscation. {Signed} Benjamin Flanders, Supervising Special Agent of the Treasury Department," verso notes on contents of document. Height: 12 3/4" Width: 7 5/8" NOTE: George Pritchard, First Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, L-Y and First Squadron, Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, Confederate Army. John McLure1816-1893) Steamer Captain, Union Army. Benjamin F. Flanders became Supervising Special Agent at New Orleans on May 16, 1863, with jurisdiction over Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Under Treasury regulations approved by the President on September 11, 1863, his area was designated as the Fifth Special Agency, to comprise Texas and the areas in Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi occupied by U.S. forces operating from the south. On June 3, 1864, Flanders was assigned control of the west coast of Florida and Key West, but under the reorganization of July 1864 his area became the Third Special Agency and no longer included Arkansas, Texas, and the port of Key West. On April 25, 1865, the boundaries of the agency were "modified so that it comprises so much of the States of Louisiana and Mississippi as lies south of Grand Gulf, and including that place."
