A RUSSIAN PARCEL GILT EGG TEMPERA PAINTED ICON OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST IN THE 16TH CENTURY NOVGOROD STYLE, LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY, the scene of the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor with Old Testament prophets Moses and Elijah standing to either side of the risen Christ and are pictured in awe, shadowed by angels, while below Jesus is in the presence of his closest disciples involved in pre- and post-transfiguration scenes of Christ and the Apostles Peter, John and James, and at the lower center an additional figure of Christ reaches out to Peter, asking him to stand up and not to be afraid, surrounded by a painted red and gesso frame.
