A KUBA CARVED WOOD LIDDED TUKULA POWDER BOX, ZAIRE/ THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, the brass tack mounted crescent moon form lid centering an arched handle within stylized basket weave detailed panels above conforming sides with one side continuing stylized weave pattern, opening to an interior with traces of red Tukula powder. Height: 2 1/2" Width: 12 3/4" Depth: 4 1/4" NOTE: Tukula powder is a reddish powder made from the bark of a tree and used for hair coloring as well as decorating the face and torso for ceremonies and dances. It was also used to anoint bodies in preparation for burial. Tukula was considered an expensive cosmetic, and, as such, a treasured commodity that would have been stored in an appropriate elaborately carved wood box.
