In his 1997 catalogue of Delftware in the Victoria and Albert Museum, section A13-21, Michael Archer discusses the origin and chronology of chargers decorated with 'The Temptation'. These ultimately derive from an engraving by Crispin van de Passe which Archer reproduces as fig.24. The present lot is a relatively early example of the subject and is likely to be from London.
