A sophisticated rendering of the enthroned Buddha seated in the bhadrasana pose from Vietnam. The Buddha pose is similar to those popularised by the Mon territories of Thailand. The Buddha gazes forward, his eyes open downcast and reflective, the right hand in the vitarka mudra, one of teaching. His left hand rests palm up on his thigh and appears to hold the end of his robe, which is worn open, consistent with other early Buddhas from region. He is seated on a moulded platform throne without any trace of a back. HIs feet rest on a circular projection that was probably meant to be decorated as a lotus support. The enthroned Buddha is usually identified as Maitreya, the Messianic saviour of Mahayana Buddhism. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece.
