Ca. 19th century standing Burmese Mandalay style Buddha. The enlightened Buddha, is remarkable for its realistic yet delicate delineation of the limbs and the bejewelled robe which seems to cling to the body. The garment (sanghati) covers both shoulders. Both lowered hands are in the varada mudra. This mudra offers charity, compassion and the granting of wishes. It signifies the five perfections: Generosity, Morality, Patience, Effort and Meditative Concentration, through the five extended fingers.??A very naturalistic succession of wavy folds on the surface of his body revealing the soft contours of the body underneath. His face is handsome with a slight smile and straight nose.??The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. ??His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. ??The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head, symbolizes his high level of spiritual development.??Provenance: Ex- private UK Collection. Please contact us for high resolution images of the piece.
