Ink on paper, featuring two birds on rock, signed and attr. Ding Yanyong (Chinese, 1902-1978), inscribed with 1 artist seal, 70 x 34 cm. Ding Yanyong was a Chinese painter credited with bringing the aesthetics of Western art to his country. Often referred to as the Matisse of the East, Ding’s paintings merged Chinese and Western styles to achieve a harmony of the two traditions. Born on April 15, 1902 in Maoming, China, his father taught him Chinese poetry as a child and encouraged his artistic talent. Ding was among the first Chinese artists who went to Japan to study Western painting in the early decades of the 20th century. He attended the Tokyo School of Fine Arts between 1919 and 1925. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Ding adopted the individualist attitudes of the Chinese literati and individualist traditions, while also delving into the ancient calligraphy. Ding was particularly influenced by the works of 17th-century artist Bada Shanren. In 1949, he moved to Hong Kong, where he continued to teach and produce art until his death in 1978.
